Superman, the iconic Man of Steel, has consistently demonstrated feats of strength and resilience that have solidified his place among the most formidable superheroes in the DC Universe. Throughout the decades, writers have progressively amplified his power, elevating him to a near-godlike status, capable of feats like containing the force of a black hole within his grasp.
However, the DC Universe is populated with godlike entities, some of whom have posed significant threats to Superman himself. His longstanding battles with Mr. Mxyzptlk, an imp from the Fifth Dimension with the power to reshape reality at will, highlight this dynamic. While Superman’s intellect has often allowed him to outsmart Mxyzptlk, the question arises: what would happen if Superman’s essence were combined with the limitless power of a Fifth-Dimensional imp?
The answer appears in the form of Kal-Elf, a counterpart introduced in “Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum.” This narrative sees Superman teaming up with Mr. Mxyzptlk to combat Brian-iac, an embodiment of Anti-Imagination threatening to extinguish creativity.
To navigate the Fifth Dimension, Superman requires a Fifth-Dimensional familiar. Drawing upon his imagination, he conceives Kal-Elf, a miniature version of himself infused with the magic of the Fifth Dimension.
Kal-Elf proves instrumental in the fight against Brian-iac, effortlessly transforming into various forms, such as a locomotive and a “birdplane”, to defeat the villain’s forces. Ultimately, Kal-Elf assists in sending Brian-iac away, solidifying his status as a powerful ally.
While Kal-Elf’s appearances have been limited, his potential power is immense. The Fifth Dimension is the source of imagination within the DC Universe, and its inhabitants possess the ability to manipulate the Third Dimension. Considering the chaos the Joker unleashed when he temporarily wielded Mxyzptlk’s power, Kal-Elf, imbued with Superman’s inherent goodness and the reality-bending abilities of a Fifth-Dimensional imp, could be the most powerful iteration of Superman to date.
Superman’s spirit combined with the unrestrained power of the Fifth Dimension creates a being capable of reshaping reality with ease. While Kal-Elf may remain a non-canonical character, his introduction raises the question of whether a Superman with such unfettered power might be too overwhelming, even within the context of superhero narratives.
